Each field in an Etsy listing — title, tags, description, photos, attributes, category, shipping, and price — is a chance to appear in a relevant search. Missing or weak fields mean missed impressions and lower click-through rates.
This checklist walks through every field that affects Etsy search visibility. Work through it before publishing or refreshing a listing. Bookmark it and run through the steps every time you list a new product.
A note on accuracy: Etsy rules and limits change. Always verify current requirements against the official Etsy Help Center before making significant listing changes.
Your Pre-Publish Etsy Listing Optimization Checklist
1. Etsy Title — Up to 140 Characters
- Title is under 140 characters — titles over 140 will be cut off
- Most important keyword is in the first 55 characters (what shows in Etsy search results)
- Title reads naturally — not just a string of comma-separated keywords
- Primary material, product type, and key style are present
- Target buyer or use case is implied or stated
2. Etsy Tags — 13 Tags, 20 Characters Each
- Exactly 13 tags are filled in (using all slots maximizes search coverage)
- Each tag is 20 characters or fewer (longer tags are silently truncated)
- Tags use multi-word phrases where possible (e.g., gift for her, rustic candle) rather than single words
- Tags do not repeat terms already in the title, category, or attributes
- At least 3–4 tags cover long-tail buyer-intent phrases (e.g., personalized gift for mom, handmade leather wallet)
- Tags include relevant occasion or style variations

3. Etsy Description — First Paragraph Is the Most Important
- First 2–3 sentences answer who this is for and what problem it solves
- Key details — material, dimensions, color, weight — appear early in the description, not buried at the bottom
- Personalization or customization options are clearly stated
- All care instructions are included where relevant
- Description uses short paragraphs and bullet points for readability (buyers skim on mobile)
- No spelling or grammatical errors

4. Photos — All 10 Slots Used
- 10 photos are uploaded (Etsy allows 10; use them all)
- Photo 1 is the strongest flat-lay, model shot, or hero image — high resolution, good lighting, clean background
- Multiple angles and close-up detail shots are included
- At least one scale or lifestyle photo shows real-world size and context
- Photos are well-lit, in-focus, and free of distracting text overlays
- Alt text / image descriptions are set for each photo (helps Etsy understand the product)
5. Category and Attributes — Be Specific
- The narrowest applicable category is selected (not the broadest parent category)
- All relevant attributes are filled in (material, color, style, size, etc.)
- Attributes do not duplicate the category name (Etsy indexes both automatically; redundancy wastes tag slots)
- Property options (e.g., size, color variants) are set correctly with price adjustments where needed
6. Shipping and Processing — Set Realistic Expectations
- Processing time accurately reflects how long it takes to make or prepare the item
- US domestic shipping is offered (listings with free or low-cost US shipping rank better)
- Shipping cost is tracked where possible (untracked shipping creates risk for both buyer and seller)
- International shipping options are set if you ship globally (even a high international rate is better than no option)
- Handling time and shipping upgrades are clearly described
7. Pricing — Cover Costs and Reflect Value
- Price covers: materials + labor + Etsy fees (approx. 6.5% transaction + $0.20 listing fee + 3–4% payment processing) + packaging + shipping
- Price is competitive with similar listings in the same category and quality tier
- Quantity is set correctly (1 unless it is a bundle or set)
- Price variations for size, color, or personalization options are correctly configured
- Consider adding a listing upgrade (e.g., personalization) as a priced option
8. Reviews and Social Proof — Build Credibility Early
- The listing has at least a few initial orders or reviews (new listings with zero reviews may get fewer clicks)
- Shop star rating is above 4.0 (listings from lower-rated shops are shown less often)
- Response time in your shop settings is set to respond to messages quickly
- Shop policies (return, cancellation) are clearly defined and linked in the description
9. Analytics and Testing — Monitor After Publishing
- Etsy Search Visibility page (Shop Manager → Listings → Search Visibility) is checked within 3–5 days of publishing
- Tags generating zero impressions after 2 weeks are replaced with new keyword variations
- Low click-through rate on impressions → test a new first photo or title
- Listing is refreshed periodically (Etsy bumps recently updated listings in search results)
- Tags and title are updated seasonally for holiday or occasion-based products
Common Etsy Listing Mistakes to Fix Before Publishing
- Title over 140 characters — Etsy will cut it off mid-word. Count your characters before saving.
- Tags exceeding 20 characters — any tag over 20 characters is silently truncated by Etsy. Count each tag manually or use a character counter tool.
- Tags duplicating category or attributes — if "silver necklace" is already your attribute, using it as a tag wastes a slot that could capture a different search.
- Description with no formatting — walls of text perform poorly on mobile. Use short paragraphs, line breaks, and bullet points.
- No scale or lifestyle photo — buyers cannot hold the item. A scale reference or context shot dramatically reduces uncertainty and returns.
- Processing time set too short — this is the most common cause of poor reviews and cancellations. Be honest about your production time.
- Wrong or missing category — listing in the wrong category means Etsy cannot route your listing to the right browse path. Always check the most specific sub-category.
- Leaving tag slots empty — each empty slot is a missed keyword opportunity. Fill all 13.
