Generate Tags with AI →How Etsy Keyword Search Matching Works
Etsy search matching has two stages: match first, then rank.
When a buyer types a search query, Etsy looks for listings whose title, tags, and attributes contain overlapping words. This is the match stage — if there is no word overlap, the listing does not appear at all.
Once a listing matches the query, Etsy ranks it using quality signals including price relevance, star rating and review count, listing photo quality, recency of the listing, and shipping cost. Better-quality listings tend to rank higher among matching results.
That means keywords are the gatekeepers — without a match, nothing else matters. But getting the match is only the first step; the quality of your listing determines where you appear in results.
Etsy occasionally introduces broader marketplace updates that can affect how listings perform at scale. For the most current understanding of how these signals interact, check the official Etsy Seller Handbook.
Start with Product Facts Before Keywords
Resist the urge to start with keyword tools or competitor titles. Begin with your product.
Write down the answers to these questions:
- What is the product (e.g., candle, necklace, printable, t-shirt)?
- What is it made of (e.g., soy wax, sterling silver, digital file)?
- What size, color, or dimensions apply?
- What style does it fit (e.g., minimalist, boho, farmhouse)?
- Who is it for (e.g., mom, teacher, dog lover, bride)?
- What occasion does it suit (e.g., birthday, wedding, housewarming)?
- What makes it different from similar items?
These facts become your seed vocabulary. Every keyword you add to your listing should describe something real about the product. Irrelevant keywords may hurt your conversion rate and, in some cases, trigger quality flags.
Etsy Title Keywords: Use 140 Characters Wisely
Your Etsy title has a 140-character limit. The first 55 characters are what show in search results before they get cut off, so put your primary keyword at the very front.
Within the full 140 characters, you have room to layer in:
- Primary keyword (most important — front-load it)
- Secondary product keywords
- Material or key feature
- Style descriptor
- Key occasion or recipient phrases
Separate phrases with commas or spaces. Do not stuff synonyms that are not accurate — Etsy's algorithm is good at detecting keyword dilution.
Important: Always use 140 characters as the ceiling. Titles that exceed 140 characters will be cut off on the listing page and in search results.
Etsy rules and limits may change over time. Check the official Listing Title Tips help article for the most current requirements.
Tags: 13 Tags, 20 Characters Each
Etsy gives you 13 tag slots per listing. Each tag is capped at 20 characters (letters, numbers, spaces, single quotes, and hyphens all count). Do not start a tag with a single quote or hyphen.
Tags are not indexed the same way as titles — they are an additional keyword layer. Use all 13 slots with phrases that do not duplicate your title, category, or attributes. If you have already selected "sterling silver" as an attribute, for example, do not waste a tag slot repeating it.
A practical target mix:
- 2–3 product keyword tags (what it is)
- 2–3 material or feature tags
- 2–3 occasion tags (birthday, wedding, holiday)
- 2–3 recipient tags (for her, for mom, for teacher)
- 2–3 buyer-intent tags (gift, personalized, unique)
Use the free Tag Generator to create three complete tag sets and pick the best 13. Always count characters before copying to Etsy — tags over 20 characters are silently truncated.
Category and Attributes: Choose the Most Specific Options
Before writing tags, set your category and attributes. Etsy uses these to match your listing to browse paths and to index the product type automatically.
Choose the most specific category available — not just "Jewelry" but "Birthstone Necklaces," for example. The more specific your category, the less competition you face from broad matches.
Fill in every relevant attribute: material, color, style, size, and holiday, if applicable. Attributes are indexed separately from tags, so there is no need to repeat them in your tag list.
Common mistake: sellers add the exact category name or attribute value as a tag. This wastes a tag slot on a word Etsy already has. Use tags to cover the gaps — the related search queries that your category and attributes do not fully capture.
Long-Tail Keyword Ideas: Buyer Intent, Occasion, Recipient, Material, Style, Season
Long-tail keywords are specific multi-word phrases rather than generic single words. "Handmade lavender soy candle gift set" is a long-tail keyword. "Candle" is not.
Long-tail keywords face less competition and describe your product more precisely, which tends to improve conversion. Here is how to generate them systematically:
By buyer intent
Think about what the buyer is trying to accomplish: gift, personal treat, home decoration, resupply. Example tags: gift for her, housewarming gift, self care treat.
By occasion
What event does the buyer shop for? Birthday, anniversary, bridal shower, graduation, Valentine's Day, Christmas. Example tags: bridal shower gift, graduation gift for her, Christmas gift mom.
By recipient
Who is the gift for? Mom, dad, sister, best friend, teacher, nurse, dog mom, cat lover. Example tags: gift for best friend, teacher gift ideas, dog mom gift.
By material
What is it made of? Sterling silver, ceramic, soy wax, organic cotton, acrylic yarn. Example tags: sterling silver earrings, soy wax candle, organic cotton baby.
By style
What aesthetic does it match? Minimalist, boho, cottagecore, farmhouse, vintage, modern. Example tags: minimalist jewelry, boho wall decor, farmhouse kitchen.
By season
Is the item seasonal? Christmas, Halloween, graduation (May–June), back to school (August), Valentine's Day (January–February). Example tags: Christmas gift for her, graduation keepsake, Valentine gift for wife.
Combine angles to create compound long-tail phrases: instead of "gift" and "mom" separately, try "mom birthday gift ideas" as one tag (within the 20-character limit, split into two tags if needed).
Use Etsy Search Visibility to Iterate
Publishing a listing is not the end of keyword research — it is the beginning of the feedback loop.
Open Shop Manager → Listings → Search Visibility to see:
- Which search queries are showing your listing
- How many impressions each query generates
- Your click-through rate for each query
Look at the "queries" column first. These are the actual searches buyers typed. If a relevant query is showing your listing but you do not have a tag for it, add that phrase as a new tag.
Tags with zero impressions after 2 weeks are not helping. Replace them with new variations from your keyword research. Check the Search Visibility page monthly — buyer language shifts with trends, seasons, and market changes.

Common Etsy Keyword Mistakes to Avoid
Exceeding the 140-character title limit
Etsy titles are capped at 140 characters. Titles that exceed this limit will be cut off on the listing page and in search results.
Repeating the exact category or attribute in tags
If your category is "Birthstone Pendants" and you selected "Sterling Silver" as an attribute, those terms are already indexed. Adding them as tags wastes 2 of your 13 slots on words that are not improving your keyword coverage.
Only using single-word tags
Multi-word phrases like gift for mom or lavender soy candle match how buyers actually search. Single-word tags face more competition and are less specific.
Tagging with irrelevant keywords
Adding tags like "bestseller" or "trending" that do not describe your product does not help your ranking and may hurt conversion. Only use accurate, relevant terms.
Leaving tag slots empty
You have 13 slots. Each one is a keyword opportunity. Empty slots mean missed search impressions — there is no penalty for using all 13.
Copying competitor titles word-for-word
Competitors may have optimized titles that work for their listings, but your product facts, attributes, and tags should be your own. Use competitor titles as inspiration for keyword ideas, not as templates to copy.
